A battery hydrometer is a tool used to measure the specific gravity (SP) of the electrolyte in a lead-acid battery. This measurement helps determine the state of charge and health of the battery. The specific gravity of the electrolyte changes depending on whether the battery is charged or discharged, and it can also be affected by temperature.

Key Features of a Battery Hydrometer:

  1. Scale Range: Typically ranges from 1100 SP (discharged) to 1300 SP (fully charged).

  2. Temperature Compensation: Some hydrometers include a built-in thermometer and temperature correction chart, as specific gravity readings are temperature-dependent.

  3. Design: Usually consists of a glass or plastic tube with a float (hydrometer) inside, which rises or falls based on the density of the electrolyte.

How to Use a Battery Hydrometer:

  1. Safety First: Wear protective gear (gloves, goggles) as battery acid is corrosive.

  2. Open Battery Cells: Remove the caps from the battery cells to access the electrolyte.

  3. Draw Electrolyte: Insert the hydrometer into the cell and draw enough electrolyte to float the hydrometer.

  4. Read Specific Gravity: Hold the hydrometer vertically and read the specific gravity at eye level. The float will indicate the SP value on the scale.

  5. Temperature Adjustment: If the hydrometer does not have automatic temperature compensation, use a correction chart to adjust the reading based on the electrolyte temperature.

  6. Compare Readings: Compare the SP readings across all cells. A fully charged battery typically reads around 1260-1300 SP, while a discharged battery reads closer to 1100 SP.

  7. Record and Analyze: Note the readings and determine the battery's state of charge and health. Significant variations between cells may indicate a problem.

Temperature Considerations:

  • Hot Weather: Higher temperatures can cause the electrolyte to expand, leading to lower specific gravity readings. Adjust the reading using a temperature correction chart.

  • Cold Weather: Lower temperatures can cause the electrolyte to contract, leading to higher specific gravity readings. Again, adjust using the correction chart.

Interpreting Specific Gravity Readings:

  • 1300 SP: Fully charged battery.

  • 1250 SP: About 75% charged.

  • 1200 SP: About 50% charged.

  • 1150 SP: About 25% charged.

  • 1100 SP: Fully discharged.

Maintenance Tips:

  • Regularly check the specific gravity to monitor battery health.

  • Ensure the battery is properly charged and maintained to prolong its lifespan.

  • Replace the battery if specific gravity readings are consistently low or vary significantly between cells.
